New research has crowned Scotland’s Caledonian Canal as the most scenic canal in the UK, with the Crinan Canal also earning a well-deserved place in the top five.

The research, conducted by Roam and Roost, highlights the best navigable canals across the UK, showcasing their historical importance, breathtaking scenery, and role as hubs for outdoor activity.

The Caledonian Canal secured the top spot, thanks to its dramatic setting in the Scottish Highlands, where it winds through some of the most iconic landscapes in the country.

Originally built by famed engineer Thomas Telford between 1803 and 1822, the Caledonian Canal was designed to provide a safe and efficient passage for ships travelling between Scotland’s east and west coasts.

This extraordinary waterway spans 60 miles and incorporates a series of lochs, including Loch Ness, Loch Oich, Loch Dochfour, and Loch Lochy, making it a unique blend of man-made and natural engineering.

One of its most famous features is Neptune’s Staircase, a remarkable flight of eight locks near Fort William that lifts boats 64 feet, making it the longest staircase lock in Britain.

For those looking to experience its beauty, the canal offers something for everyone, from walking and cycling to canoeing and canal boat holidays, with stunning views guaranteed at every turn.

The Crinan Canal, which earned the fourth spot on the list, is often described as “the most beautiful shortcut in Britain” and spans just nine miles across the Kintyre Peninsula.

Crinan Canal

Built in the late 18th century as a direct route between the Firth of Clyde and the Inner Hebrides, the Crinan Canal allows boats to bypass the long journey around the Mull of Kintyre.

Its flat, traffic-free towpath makes it perfect for a family-friendly day out, whether you’re cycling, walking, or simply soaking up the serene beauty of its tranquil waters.

The Crinan Canal’s charm lies not only in its picturesque surroundings but also in its accessibility, offering visitors a chance to explore its full length in a single day.

The top ten scenic canals also included waterways across England and Wales, such as the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, Lancaster Canal, and Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, but Scotland claimed two of the most coveted spots on the list.

James Anelay of canalboatholidays.co.uk praised the UK’s canals for their beauty and accessibility, saying:

“The UK undoubtedly has some of the best canals in the world, and they provide enormous economic, environmental, and social value.”

He added:

“Towpaths are a fantastic asset, right on the doorstep for millions of people, offering free access to incredible landscapes.”

With canals increasingly recognised as vital green and blue spaces, this ranking is a reminder of the rich history and stunning scenery waiting to be discovered across the UK.

For those inspired to explore Scotland’s waterways, the Caledonian and Crinan canals offer unparalleled opportunities to connect with nature, history, and adventure.
