ScotRail passengers will see ticket prices rise by 3.8 per cent from April 2025 as Transport Scotland confirms its latest fares review.
The increase, announced today, will apply across all ScotRail fares, marking another step in the Scottish Government’s efforts to balance rail service sustainability with affordability.
Despite the rise, the 20 per cent discount on season tickets will continue until September 2025, offering some relief to regular commuters.
Additionally, the Flexipass scheme remains in place, providing 12 single (or six return) journeys, with recent expansions to include more stations such as Exhibition Centre (Glasgow), Motherwell, Perth, Stirling and Bathgate.
Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop defended the move, stating:
“We know that any increase is unwelcome for passengers, therefore we have kept the rise as low as possible to maintain the attractiveness and affordability of rail as a travel option.”
She also highlighted ongoing efforts to boost rail usage, including continued discounts and new fare initiatives aimed at attracting more passengers.
ScotRail, now under public ownership, has faced mounting financial pressures, with ministers seeking to strike a balance between maintaining services and keeping fares competitive.
Commuters, however, may feel the pinch, especially as many already struggle with the cost of living.
With rail seen as a greener alternative to driving, campaigners argue that more should be done to keep fares low and encourage public transport use.
For now, passengers will need to brace for another fare hike while hoping that future initiatives make rail travel more accessible and appealing.
