Shaping The Future Of Speed Limits in Scotland

The Scottish Government has opened a consultation to gather views on proposed changes to speed limits aimed at making roads safer and journeys smoother.

The National Speed Management Review seeks to ensure speed limits are appropriate for modern road conditions while reducing injuries and fatalities.

Proposals include reducing the national speed limit on single carriageways from 60mph to 50mph and raising limits for goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes to 50mph on single carriageways and 60mph on dual carriageways.

Evidence from the review suggests these changes could significantly cut road collisions without compromising journey times or reliability.

Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop emphasised the Government’s commitment to making Scotland’s roads the safest in the world by 2030.

“This consultation is part of a record £36 million investment in road safety this year,” she said.

“We want to hear from everyone to help shape these vital changes, which could lead to fewer injuries and greater journey efficiency.”

Engagement sessions will be held early next year to ensure broad input, alongside the online consultation, which runs until Wednesday 5 March 2025.

The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has praised the initiative, pointing to the success of a similar trial on the A9, where increasing HGV speed limits reduced risky overtaking and improved safety.

Martin Reid of the RHA highlighted environmental and economic benefits, noting that lorries driving at 50mph consume less fuel and emit fewer pollutants.

“These changes could make roads safer, cut emissions, and save costs—benefits we welcome wholeheartedly,” he said.

The consultation represents a step towards achieving Scotland’s ambitious casualty reduction targets while addressing evolving transport needs.
