Stay The Night Scheme Now Open Year-Round for Campervans and Motorhomes

Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) has announced its popular ‘Stay the Night’ scheme will now run throughout the year following the success of a winter trial last year.

The initiative allows visitors in self-contained campervans and motorhomes to stay overnight at selected FLS car parks, providing a convenient and responsible option for travellers exploring Scotland.

Though the number of participating sites will be reduced during winter, there are still locations across the country welcoming visitors who prefer to travel off-season.

Alan Chalmers, Visitor Planning Manager at FLS, said the scheme’s extension reflects the growing demand for winter touring opportunities.

“The trial showed us that people enjoy exploring Scotland’s landscapes during the quieter months, and many used the chance to overnight responsibly at our car parks,” he said.

Chalmers added that the scheme encourages visitors to stop at locations they might otherwise pass by, potentially supporting rural businesses in the off-season.

FLS is urging users of the scheme to respect the guidelines, which include no fires or barbecues, taking all rubbish away, keeping noise levels to a minimum, and seeking alternative options if a car park is full.

Overnight stays are available on a first-come-first-served basis for a modest fee of £7, payable via the RingGo app or by phone, with a £10 charge at locations offering chemical waste disposal.

The scheme permits stays for one night only between 6 pm and 10 am, with no return to the same site allowed for 48 hours, ensuring fair access for all.

FLS staff will monitor participating car parks to ensure rules are followed, reminding visitors that tents, generators, or vehicles without their own toilet facilities are not permitted.

The scheme continues to emphasise responsible travel, providing an excellent way to experience Scotland’s natural beauty while preserving the environment.
