Thousands of Affordable Homes Transform Highland Communities

Over 8,500 affordable homes have been delivered in the Highland Council area since 2007.

New figures confirm 8,573 homes have been completed in the region, made up of 5,219 social homes and 3,354 classed as affordable.

This forms part of nearly 137,000 affordable homes built across Scotland since the SNP came to power.

Of that national figure, 97,099 are social rented homes, putting Scotland well ahead of other UK nations.

Scotland has delivered 40% more affordable homes per head than England and 70% more than Wales.

Maree Todd, MSP for Caithness, Sutherland and Ross, has welcomed the progress in Highland.

She described the new figures as a “significant step forward” in tackling the region’s housing crisis.

Ms Todd said housing remains central to building a more secure and prosperous future for the Highlands.

She praised the SNP’s commitment to tackling homelessness and improving housing security for everyone.

Scotland is set to invest £768 million in affordable housing in the year ahead.

That includes new builds, upgrades, and support for people at risk of losing their homes.

The continued investment shows a clear contrast to slower progress elsewhere in the UK.

Ms Todd said Scotland spends more per head than any other part of the UK on housing solutions.

She added that the work already done has helped thousands of families remain in their own communities.

She also pointed to the government’s wider ambition to tackle the causes of homelessness, not just the symptoms.

Access to secure, affordable housing is being treated as a key part of supporting health, education, and employment.

The new data highlights how local areas like Highland are benefitting from national policy choices.

Housing campaigners have long called for consistent investment in rural and remote areas.

The SNP say that demand for housing in Highland remains high, and progress will continue.

Under the new leadership of John Swinney, housing remains a core national priority.

Ms Todd said the SNP is delivering real results for Highland families.

With thousands of homes already complete, local communities are seeing lasting change.

This comes at a time when many UK regions are struggling to meet housing targets.

The SNP argues that its long-term commitment to affordable housing is making a measurable impact.

The figures show how policy decisions made at Holyrood are reaching people on the ground.

Scotland’s focus on social and affordable homes continues to outpace the rest of the UK.

And for people in Highland, the results are already visible on streets, estates, and in local communities.
