VisitScotland Shares 10 One-of-a-Kind Summer Events in Scotland

Festival season is about to be in full swing, and Scotland, home to the world’s largest arts festivals each August in Edinburgh, sits at the heart of a vibrant and diverse cultural scene.

While some of the biggest names may have already sold out, there are still countless events to enjoy across the country. 

From book festivals in blooming gardens, live music by the sea, weekends dedicated to delicious local food and drink, and dog shows with a twist, Scotland’s summer is full of unique events that are creative, welcoming, and bursting with personality.  

Whether you’re into music, art, tasty food, or just looking for a great day out, VisitScotland’s guide highlights the standout experiences that will help make this summer truly unforgettable. 

Borders Book Festival, 12-15 June 2025 

Harmony Garden, Melrose 

Located in the heart of the Scottish Borders, this four-day festival is a celebration of all things literary, featuring over 100 events, from author talks and comedy shows to a dedicated family book festival. 

It’s a must for book lovers, although you don’t need to be a big reader to enjoy it because alongside the literary lineup, there are inspiring health and wellbeing sessions, local food and drink, bookshop and marketplace, as well as live performances from talented local artists and musicians. 

Leith Festival, 14-22 June 2025 

Leith, Edinburgh 

Rooted in local pride and community, this week-long festival takes place in Edinburgh’s historic port district of Leith, with origins dating back to 1907. 

Organised by and for the people of Leith, it startswith a Gala Day and continues with a mix of stalls from local makers and artists, live music, food, and even a dog show. 

Throughout the week, there’s plenty to get involved in, from performances and walking tours to taster sessions popping up in venues across Leith. 

Outer Hebrides Wildlife Festival, 1-28 June 

Outer Hebrides 

Celebrating the unique wildlife and natural beauty of the Outer Hebrides, this annual community-led festival offers a rich and varied programme of events.

From guided walks and boat tours to nature writing workshops, Gaelic sessions, and marine wildlife encounters, it’s a chance to explore and reconnect with the landscapes and species that make these islands so special. 

Highlights include opportunities to spot majestic sea eagles, charismatic puffins, dolphins, and even basking sharks.

Visitors can also enjoy whale watching along the Hebridean Whale Trail, look out for playful otters along the shorelines, and meet the iconic Eriskay ponies. 

East Neuk Festival, 25-29 June 2025 

East Neuk of Fife (Crail, Anstruther, Kilrenny, St Monans and Elie) 

The East Neuk of Fife, famous for its picturesque coastline and colourful harbours, is home to a festival that brings globally recognised music to some of Scotland’s most charming seaside villages. 

Over five days, the region comes alive with performances from leading classical, jazz, folk and experimental artists, all taking to intimate venues like historic chapels, village halls and harbour side spaces. 

It opens with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and guitarist Sean Shibe, features all five of Beethoven’s late quartets performed by top ensembles, and continues with a special performance of Beethoven’s Septet. 

It’s a unique mix of big talent and small-town charm. 

Kelburn Garden Party, 3-7 July 

North Ayrshire 

Set in the enchanting glen of a 13th-century painted castle on Scotland’s west coast, Kelburn Garden Party is a vibrant, multi-arts festival blending music, visual art, performance, and nature.

Just 30 minutes from Glasgow, it offers an eclectic lineup across hidden forest stages, immersive installations, and creative spaces, drawing a loyal, diverse crowd from near and far for an unforgettable celebration of creativity and community. 

Dornoch Beer and Music Festival, 26 July 

Dornoch, Scottish Highlands. 

Set in pretty East Sutherland, in the heart of the Highlands, the Dornoch Music & Beer Festival offers a lively day of music, craft beer, and family fun.

With over 100 beers and ciders on tap, a stacked lineup of live performances, and plenty for younger festival-goers, from bouncy castles to face painting, it’s a celebration for all ages.

Headlining this year’s event are the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, bringing their high-energy blend of rock and traditional Scottish music to the stage for an unforgettable night. 

Fringe by the Sea, 1-10 August 2025 

North Berwick, East Lothian 

Stretching over ten days with around 250 events, Fringe by the Sea transforms the seaside town of North Berwick into a hub of music, comedy, literature, film, and family entertainment. 

It features everything from headline acts and insightful talks to workshops and kids’ activities.

Beyond the stages, visitors can enjoy the buzzing Street Food Village, sample flavours from around the world, and browse the Makers’ Market filled with crafts, local produce, and one-of-a-kind finds. 

Galloway Country Fair, 9-10 August 2025 

Drumlanrig Castle, Dumfries & Galloway 

Held at the iconic pink Drumlanrig Castle, this festival is perfect if you’re looking for something a little different and is full of outdoor fun. 

Expect a mix of country sports, bird of prey displays, family-friendly activities, a lively main arena, and plenty of local food and craft stalls.

One of the highlights includes an entertaining show starring skilled dogs and a team of determined Indian Runner ducks.  

Rising North Festival, 15-17 August 

Lerwick, Shetland 

Now in its second year, Rising North Festival returns to Shetland with an expanded four-day programme celebrating homegrown talent and live music.

Kicking off with fringe events across Lerwick on Thursday, the festival builds to two nights of main-stage action at Clickimin Leisure Centre, including a Saturday daytime family-friendly session.

The 2025 lineup includes rising Scottish star Callum Beattie, alongside a packed bill of local artists.

The weekend wraps with a chilled finale at Mareel on Sunday, a fitting close to a vibrant celebration of Shetland’s music scene. 

Stranraer Oyster Festival, 12-14 September 2025 

Stranraer, Dumfries & Galloway 

Wrap up summer with a trip to the Stranraer Oyster Festival, a weekend packed with great food, local flavour and plenty for families to enjoy. 

It’s a tribute to seafood and coastal culture, with highlights including the Scottish Oyster Shucking Championships, live cooking demos from top chefs, music, markets, and family activities.

All of it is proudly rooted in the local community, making it a fun and authentic way to experience the spirit of the south west.
