Preparations are in full swing to bring the Cairngorm funicular railway back into service this winter.
Maintenance activities are now underway on the electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems that power the two funicular carriages along the 1.8km viaduct.
The dedicated team at Cairngorm Mountain began this essential work on Wednesday, 5 February, focusing on ensuring optimal performance and safety.
Later this week, an engineer from Garaventa, the Swiss funicular specialist responsible for supplying and maintaining the carriages and control system, will collaborate with the local team.
This partnership will facilitate the scheduled annual inspections of the railway’s mechanical components.
Frequent trial runs of the carriages are planned over the next week to rigorously test system reliability on the mountainside.
Simultaneously, remediation efforts continue on the viaduct structure, led by Balfour Beatty on behalf of Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), the mountain estate owner.
Although substantial progress was made before Christmas, further inspections revealed additional work requirements.
As a result, Balfour Beatty teams returned to the site in early January to address these outstanding issues.
HIE remains committed to ensuring the funicular’s safe return to service as soon as possible during the current winter season.
A definitive relaunch date will be announced once all safety and operational standards are fully met.
