Young readers across Moray are about to embark on a magical adventure that blends the joy of books with the beauty of the great outdoors.

The much-loved Summer Reading Challenge returns this year under the enchanting theme of Story Garden, inviting primary school children to explore nature through the pages of their favourite books.

Launching in libraries across Moray on Saturday 21 June, the 2025 challenge is free to join and open to all young readers who want to combine storytelling with outdoor wonders.

Children are encouraged to read six books over the course of the summer, with audiobooks and eBooks also counting towards the goal.

As they turn each page and complete each story, young participants will earn stickers along the way and a medal when they reach the finish line.

But the fun does not stop at reading.

Libraries will be alive with treasure hunts, puzzles and themed activities, with some even hosting special events to keep the excitement buzzing throughout the holidays.

It is a chance for children to connect not only with books, but also with their community and the natural world around them.

To join the challenge, children simply need to be library members.

For those who are not yet signed up, membership is free and easy, though a parent or guardian will need to confirm their details.

Councillor Kathleen Robertson, Chair of Moray Councilโ€™s Education, Childrenโ€™s and Leisure Services Committee, spoke warmly about the initiative.

โ€œMy own children took part in the Summer Reading Challenge when they were in primary school, and had a wonderful time,โ€ she said.

โ€œI hope this yearโ€™s challenge helps other young people discover the magic of reading.

“It is such a great way to spark their imagination.

“With the number of activities planned at our libraries over the summer months, I have no doubt that they will have a brilliant time.โ€

The Summer Reading Challenge, which is developed by The Reading Agency, has become a cherished tradition for many families, supporting literacy and encouraging a lifelong love of reading.

With libraries offering a welcoming space full of stories, creativity and community spirit, this summer promises to be filled with happy memories and new adventures.

The challenge runs until Saturday 30 August, giving children plenty of time to dive into their chosen books and enjoy everything on offer.
