Western Isles Filmmakers and Schools Shortlisted for FilmG Awards

Filmmakers, schools and community groups from across the Western Isles have been shortlisted for this year’s FilmG Awards, with the winners set to be announced at the SEC in Glasgow on 11 June 2026.

FilmG has now revealed the shortlists for FilmG 18, the latest edition of the long running Gaelic short film competition, with strong representation from Lewis, Harris, Uist and Barra across multiple categories.

A total of 157 films were entered this year across the three competitions, including 38 entries in the 18 plus category, 60 in the under 18 competition and 59 in the newly introduced under 12 section.

The new under 12 category was created this year to provide a dedicated space for primary school entries while allowing the under 18 competition to focus more clearly on secondary school filmmakers.

In the 18 plus competition, Isla Scott, originally from the Isle of Harris and now based in Glasgow, has been shortlisted in the Factual category for Ga Mo Lorg sa Fhathast.

Cara MacDonald from the Isle of Lewis is also shortlisted in the Heritage category with Tha an t Earrach an Seo.

The under 18 competition also features a strong Western Isles presence.

An t Eilean Chaluim Chille by Na Baidhsagaels has been shortlisted in the Factual category, while Na Traoidhtearan from Sir E Scott School is shortlisted in Comedy.

Castlebay Secondary School has received two nominations, with Trèigte shortlisted in Drama and Isbeanan Gu Leòr shortlisted in Performance.

The Nicolson Institute is also strongly represented, with Cha do Shèid Gaoth Riamh shortlisted in both Heritage and FilmG Choice.

Bhlad An Oifigear Corp orra from CnaG The Nicolson Institute has also been shortlisted in the Comedy category.

Lewis schools are particularly well represented in the new under 12 competition.

Gaisgich a’ Bhac from Sgoil a’ Bhac has been shortlisted in Comedy, while Sgoil nan Loch has received two nominations with Salmaidh shortlisted in Heritage and Oidhche Shabaid aig Taigh Granaidh shortlisted in Comedy.

Laxdale Primary School is also shortlisted in the Heritage category for A’ Lorg Steòrnabhagh.

Independent judging panels selected the shortlists across all categories except the FilmG Choice Awards, which were decided through public voting.

“We are seeing previous winners taking their work into the 18+ competition, fresh voices making an impression, and a really healthy mix of drama, comedy, factual work, music, art and community stories.

“The 18+ competition is particularly strong this year, but there is also a lot to be excited about in the -18 and -12 shortlists.

“It is brilliant to see filmmakers progressing through FilmG, alongside first time entrants and new schools getting involved.

“We are also delighted to be announcing that the FilmG Awards will take place at the SEC in Glasgow on Thursday 11 June.

“It should be a brilliant night for Gaelic filmmaking.”

The winners will be announced at the FilmG Awards on Thursday 11 June 2026 at the SEC in Glasgow.
