A record-breaking pro-independence majority will be needed at next year’s Holyrood election if Scotland is to secure a second referendum, the Scottish Greens have warned.
The party is urging voters to back an “independent Scottish Republic” that re-enters the EU and replaces the monarchy with a democratic head of state.
Patrick Harvie MSP, the Greens’ spokesperson on the constitution, said his party’s vision went beyond independence, offering a “fairer, greener and better future” for all.
The call comes amid growing political divergence between Westminster and Holyrood, with Harvie citing “brutal and dehumanising” UK policies as a reason for urgent change.
“It is more vital than ever that we have the power to choose our own path,” said Harvie.
“Westminster has failed.
“We’ve had Labour and Tories lurching to the right, cutting support for pensioners and disabled people, attacking refugees and immigrants, destroying our climate, and arming Israel’s genocide against Palestinians.”
He added:
“Now with Nigel Farage and his gaggle of conmen looking to be the next through the doors of Number 10, independence is the only way to build that fairer, greener Scotland that so many in this country believe in.”
The Greens are currently the only party campaigning for both independence and a full constitutional overhaul, including the abolition of the monarchy and a written constitution shaped by the Scottish people.
They say the political landscape has shifted dramatically since 2014, with Brexit imposed against Scotland’s will and more than a million new young voters eligible to take part in a future referendum.
Harvie said:
“It is a democratic outrage that successive Prime Ministers have ignored Scotland’s voice while inflicting such cruel policies.
“The stakes are too high for business as usual.
“Next year, Scotland has a chance to put people before profit, tackle the climate emergency and build a better future.”
He urged voters to back Green candidates to keep independence on the ballot and ensure it comes with a clear mandate for climate action, social justice and European re-entry.
