Filmmakers have poured over £3.5 million directly into the Highland economy in 2024, marking a record-breaking year for the region’s screen industry.

The surge in spending reflects a steady upward trend and showcases the Highlands as a top-tier destination for television, film and commercial production.

Screen Highland, operated by The Highland Council, has been pivotal in facilitating this growth by supporting productions and promoting the area’s breathtaking backdrops.

The money spent includes everything from location fees and local crew hire to accommodation, catering and a raft of essential production services.

Chair of the Economy and Infrastructure Committee, Councillor Ken Gowans, hailed the news as a major boost for the Highland economy.

He noted that the multi-million-pound figure reflects activity across the whole of the region, with standout contributions from the UK and US versions of The Traitors filmed at Ardross Castle.

The bumper figure was also boosted by several car commercials and a number of high-end TV dramas choosing the Highlands as their dramatic setting.

Councillor Gowans praised the region’s iconic landscapes and deep cultural appeal, which continue to draw major productions to Highland soil.

He highlighted the quality of local crew and the professionalism on offer as major factors in attracting repeat business from industry giants.

As demand continues to grow, Screen Highland is encouraging more local residents to get involved with the film industry.

They are especially keen to hear from those who own rural cottages or distinctive homes that could feature in upcoming productions.

Locals are invited to join the locations and crew databases, potentially opening up new income streams and creative opportunities.

This local involvement is part of a broader drive to ensure the screen industry continues to benefit Highland communities.

Screen Highland is also working closely with productions to implement sustainability measures and community engagement practices during filming.

The aim is to grow the industry in a way that is both environmentally conscious and socially responsible.

With 2025 already shaping up to be another strong year, momentum continues to build behind the Highland film scene.

More productions are expected to follow as word spreads about the region’s mix of cinematic scenery, skilled professionals and warm hospitality.

The message is clear — the Highlands are open for filming and the cameras are rolling.
