Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has been formally recognised for its contribution during the Covid-19 pandemic, receiving a commemorative plaque from NHS Western Isles at a ceremony held in Taigh Shiphoirt on Wednesday 3 September.
The award was presented by Gillian McCannon, Chair of NHS Western Isles, to Cllr Kenny Macleod, Convener of the Comhairle, in recognition of the Council’s service to island communities during a time of profound national challenge.
Accepting the plaque, Cllr Macleod praised the dedication and adaptability of Comhairle staff across all departments, highlighting the crucial role played by frontline workers.
“Throughout the local response to COVID-19, the continued delivery of all Comhairle services relied upon the dedication and commitment of staff across services,” he said.
“Our social care staff were at the frontline of the local COVID-19 response.
“Amidst uncertainty, ever-changing regulations and the constant threat of outbreaks, care staff prioritised the wellbeing of residents and care users.”
He also paid tribute to those working behind the scenes to keep essential services running, from education and waste collection to PPE distribution and vaccine logistics.
“In continuing the delivery of education, carrying out refuse collections, distributing PPE, hosting vaccination centres and adapting service delivery with digital alternatives, Comhairle staff ensured the continuation of public service delivery and helped support public safety.
“Today was a chance to reflect on and recognise their resilience and outstanding contribution.”
Cllr Macleod also used the occasion to acknowledge the vital role of NHS Western Isles throughout the pandemic response.
“As I accept this award on behalf of the Comhairle, I would like to take a moment to recognise the work of NHS Western Isles during the pandemic,” he said.
“I would like to thank the NHS Western Isles leadership team and all NHS staff for their key role in treating patients, advising the public and leading the local health response. Thank you.”
The ceremony at Taigh Shiphoirt offered a moment of shared reflection between the local authority and the health board, two institutions whose collaboration proved central to the islands’ pandemic resilience.
Island communities, often more vulnerable to supply chain disruption and workforce shortages, depended on tight coordination between public agencies throughout the crisis.
This recognition from NHS Western Isles was a rare public moment to honour that behind-the-scenes effort.
