Ariane Burgess, Scottish Green MSP for the Highlands & Islands region, has welcomed news of the launch this weekend of Highland People’s Power, a new community benefit society dedicated to developing renewable energy projects in the Highlands.
The community group’s launch event will take place on Saturday, 2nd November at the Spectrum Centre in Inverness.
Ariane Burgess has also lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament to highlight the significance of this initiative.
The motion reads:
“That the Parliament celebrates the successful launch of Highland People’s Power on the 5th of September 2024 at the Spectrum Centre in Inverness; acknowledges the organisation’s vision to create a better energy industry in the Highlands and Scotland, one that benefits communities, workers, businesses, and the environment; understands that their aim for the majority of energy generation in the Highlands to be owned and managed by local communities within 25 years, with 100% of the benefits distributed equitably across the region; commends their efforts to support communities in pursuing shared ownership of energy generation, including solar, wind, hydro, and battery storage; recognises their commitment to distributing returns from energy projects into regional priorities such as fuel poverty, housing, and public services; and applauds their dedication to building community wealth by using local businesses and suppliers, and keeping profits within the region through community ownership and control; Further notes that Highland People Power is planning a roadshow to speak to communities around the region; highlights the importance of community-owned renewable energy in addressing fuel poverty, particularly in rural Scotland where 36% of households are affected; and recognises that this model is inspired by and can inspire similar initiatives across Scotland.”
Ms Burgess commented:
“I am thrilled to see the launch of Highland People’s Power, which represents a significant step forward in our journey towards a sustainable and community-focused energy future.
“Community ownership of renewable energy is crucial in ensuring that the financial benefits from these projects are reinvested locally, supporting our communities and fostering economic resilience.
“I look forward to seeing the positive impact this society will have on the Highlands.”
Highland People’s Power aims to collaborate with energy developers, landowners, and the Highland Council to maximise the benefits of renewable energy projects for local communities.
The society will also advocate on critical energy issues, including community benefits and addressing the electricity surcharge and standing charge in rural areas.
