Loganair, the UK’s largest regional airline, is celebrating a major milestone—50 years of connecting Barra and Tiree to the mainland—with a special treat for some lucky passengers.

Stewart Howat and Janis MacArthur, both regular travellers on Loganair’s routes to the islands, were surprised with complimentary flight vouchers to mark the occasion, recognising their long-standing loyalty.

Stewart, who lives on Barra with his family, frequently uses Loganair’s flights for work and appointments, becoming a familiar face on the famous route known for its unique beach landing.

Originally from mainland Scotland, Stewart moved to Barra six years ago with his wife and two children and relies on Loganair for fast, convenient travel to the mainland as part of his job as a construction worker.

He expressed his delight at receiving the vouchers, saying that while he usually flies for work, he hopes to use this gift for a family trip somewhere special.

Janis, who now lives in Tiree but is originally from Oban, was flying with her husband Ian and his 89-year-old mother, Duncanina MacArthur, to attend a family wedding when she too was surprised with flight vouchers.

The MacArthur family have long relied on Loganair for everything from family visits to hospital appointments, and Janis shared how important the service has been in their lives since moving back to the island.

Since Loganair launched these routes in 1974, the airline has provided a crucial lifeline for residents and visitors alike, ensuring essential year-round connectivity for healthcare, education, business, and tourism.

Michael Galbraith, the manager of Barra Airport, praised the long-standing relationship with Loganair, noting how vital the daily flights are for the island’s community, especially given the unique challenges posed by the airport’s tidal runway.

Philip Knowles, Tiree Airport manager, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the importance of Loganair’s service not only for the residents of Tiree but also for the island’s growing tourism sector, which plays a significant role in the local economy.

Mark Beveridge, managing director of Glasgow Airport, also celebrated the milestone, acknowledging Loganair’s enduring commitment to connecting remote communities and the strong bond between the airline and Glasgow Airport.

As Loganair looks to the future, the airline remains committed to providing vital air links to Barra and Tiree, ensuring these remote islands stay connected to the mainland for decades to come.

With daily flights to Glasgow and a generous luggage allowance, Loganair continues to be a crucial part of island life, supporting both residents and visitors in their travels.
