A bold new chapter in Scottish football has been announced, as the SPFL and KDM Group officially launch the KDM Evolution Trophy, a refreshed and reimagined version of the long-standing Challenge Cup.

The tournament’s new name, look and format signal a major shake-up, with a record prize pot of £1.25 million on offer, more than fifty percent up on the current season.

Backed by Fife-based construction and design firm KDM Group, the multi-year title sponsorship marks another stride in their growing support of the national game, building on their work with the Scottish FA and Dunfermline Athletic.

A brand new trophy has been specially commissioned and will be revealed this summer, just in time for the first match.

Prize money has been increased at every stage, with next season’s champions set to receive £150,000.

The runner-up will collect £100,000, while clubs exiting in earlier rounds will also benefit, with a minimum of £15,000 depending on their league phase finish.

But this competition is about much more than money.

The new format has been crafted to support the development of young players, offering opportunities to those as young as 15 as they make the step from academy football into the senior game.

The opening round will follow a league phase structure inspired by UEFA’s evolving formats.

It will include clubs from League One, League Two and B teams from the Premiership, grouped into regional north and south sections to keep travel time and costs down.

Points collected over six matchdays will determine the top 22 teams, who will progress to the knockout round of 32 alongside newly introduced Championship clubs.

From that point on, it will be a traditional knockout format through to the final in late March or early April 2026.

All B teams will play their league phase matches away from home, easing travel pressure for League One and League Two sides and their supporters.

Teams will also be allowed to field a small number of trialists during the early matches to help manage their squads.

SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster welcomed the new era, praising KDM Group’s investment and commitment.

“They have a genuine passion for Scottish football, and this long-term deal brings real benefit to all 42 clubs,” he said.

“We believe this format will give our most promising young players the chance to develop at a high level, starting earlier than ever before.”

KDM Group chief executive Iain Jones described the partnership as a proud moment for the business, drawing parallels between the trophy and the company’s own journey.

“Our growth as a company mirrors the purpose of this tournament,” he said.

“It is a platform to grow, evolve and inspire.”

With a modern structure, increased rewards and a clear pathway for emerging talent, the KDM Evolution Trophy promises to be one of the most exciting new additions to the Scottish football calendar.
