Police Speak to Hundreds of Drivers in Highland Road Safety Operation

Police Scotland officers spoke with more than 300 motorists during a month long operation aimed at improving road safety across the Highlands.

The initiative ran from 1 April to 27 April 2026, with officers engaging directly with drivers at key tourist locations to reduce the risk of serious collisions.

Advice focused on common issues linked to crashes involving visiting drivers, including driving on the left, managing fatigue and taking care when turning across traffic.

Recent activity took place at high footfall areas including Eilean Donan Castle, Urquhart Castle and Dunrobin Castle, where large numbers of visitors are expected throughout the tourism season.

Local community policing officers also supported the operation at Urquhart Castle, reinforcing the focus on education and early intervention.

The work forms part of ongoing efforts to tackle careless and dangerous driving, one of the Fatal 5 factors most commonly associated with serious and fatal collisions on Scotland’s roads.

Sergeant Calum MacAulay of the Road Policing Division said:

“Scotland’s road network can be unfamiliar to many visitors, particularly those driving on the left for the first time.

“By engaging directly with drivers at key locations, we can provide simple, clear advice that helps keep them and others safe.

“This approach is about preventing harm before it occurs, and we’ve had a positive response from those we’ve spoken to.

“We will continue to work with partners over the summer months to support safe travel across the Highlands, ensuring both residents and visitors can enjoy the area safely.”

The operation highlights the importance of early engagement as visitor numbers increase, with a clear focus on prevention rather than enforcement.
