A new village car park in Glencoe has been confirmed, with work set to go out to tender as part of plans to address long standing parking and safety issues.
The project, led by The Highland Council, is designed to ease congestion in one of Scotland’s most visited locations.
Glencoe attracts more than two million visitors each year, with many stopping in the village to access local businesses, accommodation and facilities.
That volume has placed increasing strain on existing infrastructure, with the current 20 space car park regularly overwhelmed.
The result has been congestion, unsafe parking and growing concerns for both pedestrians and road users.
The new purpose built car park aims to provide a long term solution by moving parking to the edge of the village, helping to improve traffic flow and safety in the centre.
Funding for the project comes from VisitScotland through the Rural Tourism Infrastructure Fund, alongside the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and The Highland Council.
The facility will include spaces for cars and motorhomes, accessible bays, electric vehicle charging points and bicycle racks.
Additional features include waste and chemical disposal facilities, a bus stop, coach drop off point and improved pedestrian routes.
The project has been shaped through community engagement, including surveys, public meetings and feasibility work.
Local partners including Glencoe and Glen Etive Community Council and Glencoe and Glen Etive Community SCIOhave been involved in developing the plans.
The Highland Council will oversee both construction and long term management of the site.
The development also links into the wider Glencoe Greenway initiative, which aims to promote walking, cycling and lower carbon travel options.
Taken together, the project is intended to create a safer and more organised arrival point for visitors while protecting the character of the village.
