Do you remember the joy of a kickabout in the park, pretending to be a football star scoring the winning goal at Hampden?
Walking football is bringing back those cherished moments for men across the country, combining nostalgia with impressive health benefits.
As part of Men’s Health Month this November, High Life Highland is inviting men aged 50 and over to join their walking football sessions in Fort William.
Men’s Health Month shines a spotlight on vital issues like mental health, suicide prevention, and cancer, encouraging men to talk openly and seek support when needed.
Gary Davidson, Leisure Manager at Lochaber Leisure Centre, has been leading walking football sessions on Monday nights for eight years.
“These sessions have been hugely popular, and we’d love to welcome more players,” said Gary.
“It’s a fun and sociable way to stay active, with a great sense of camaraderie among the team.”
Walking football is exactly what it sounds like—a slower-paced version of the beautiful game, designed for fitness and fun, regardless of age or physical ability.
Regular player Andy shared:
“I don’t feel like 60 when I’m playing,”
While Thomas said:
“It makes me feel like I’m 21 again!”
For Scott, it’s about more than exercise:
“It’s great fun and a good laugh.”
Brian agreed, adding:
“It’s competitive but enjoyable at the same time.”
According to Walking Football Scotland, the benefits go beyond fitness, with participants reporting improved mobility, lower blood pressure, and weight loss.
Sessions run every Monday evening from 7pm to 8.30pm at Lochaber Leisure Centre.
