Scotland’s Equalities Minister Kaukab Stewart has reaffirmed a powerful and unwavering commitment to ban harmful conversion practices, sending a clear and heartfelt message of solidarity to LGBTQI+ communities.

The Scottish Government is determined to protect individuals from these discredited and damaging practices, and if a UK-wide agreement cannot be reached, Scotland will move ahead with its own legislation early in the next Parliamentary term.

Ms Stewart said Scotland will continue working with the UK Government to shape a united legal response that protects all age groups, is inclusive of trans people, and does not allow for any loopholes around so-called “consent”.

But she made it clear that progress must come swiftly, and if it does not, Scotland is ready to legislate alone to ensure protection is delivered without delay.

The message from Holyrood is one of action and reassurance—change is coming, and those harmed by these practices will no longer be overlooked.

At the heart of the Scottish Government’s stance is a core belief in equality, inclusion and dignity for all people, regardless of how they identify or who they love.

Ms Stewart was unequivocal in her support for LGBTQI+ rights, saying Scotland’s commitment remains “absolute”, especially at a time when many in these communities have faced renewed hostility and fear.

Alongside legislative steps, practical support has already begun to flow to those affected.

A national helpline has been established to offer guidance and comfort to anyone harmed by conversion practices, ensuring survivors are not left to cope in silence.

Scotland’s NHS is being equipped with updated mental health and wellbeing resources so that primary care services can respond more sensitively and effectively to those who come forward.

Work is also underway with young people through the inclusive education programme and a vital collaboration with Young Scot is helping to create accessible, youth-focused materials around safeguarding, conversion practices and the support available.

Ms Stewart acknowledged that recent weeks have been painful and frustrating for many in LGBTQI+ communities and offered a message of comfort and resolve.

She assured them that the Scottish Government is not only listening but actively standing with them.

The direction of travel is clear—Scotland will not allow outdated and harmful ideologies to flourish under the guise of support or consent.

The journey toward dignity and protection for all continues, and Scotland’s message is one of care, courage and unshakeable hope.
