Scotland’s Best Beaches Revealed as 52 Locations Earn National Award

After a week of glorious sunshine that tempted thousands of people to the coast, Scotland’s best beaches have officially been revealed with 52 locations across the country earning one of the nation’s most respected environmental awards.

Environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful has announced the winners of Scotland’s Beach Awards 2026, recognising beaches that meet high standards for cleanliness, facilities, safety and environmental management.

From Shetland in the north to South Ayrshire in the south, the awards celebrate beaches that are not only beautiful to visit but are also being carefully managed and protected for future generations.

For many communities, the recognition is about more than tourism alone.

Scotland’s beaches play an important role in local life, providing spaces for recreation, wildlife, wellbeing and economic activity while attracting visitors from around the world to some of the country’s most spectacular coastal landscapes.

This year’s awards highlight a remarkable level of consistency, with several beaches maintaining their status for decades.

Aberdeen Ballroom Beach has now achieved award status for an impressive twentieth consecutive year, alongside Stonehaven, Inverboyndie and Coldingham Beach, while Lunan Bay in Angus celebrates ten years as an award winning beach.

Five beaches across Scotland have now retained their status for more than thirty years, while forty three beaches have held award recognition for at least a decade.

Fife once again leads the way with thirteen award winning beaches, the highest total of any region in Scotland.

Aberdeenshire follows with eight recognised beaches while East Lothian boasts seven locations carrying the prestigious award flag this summer.

For visitors, the sight of a Scotland’s Beach Award flag provides reassurance that a beach has been independently assessed and meets strict standards covering access, cleanliness, environmental quality and visitor facilities.

Chief Executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, Barry Fisher, praised the work carried out by councils, volunteers and local communities across the country.

“Scotland’s Beach Awards are the benchmark for quality, celebrating clean, well-managed and sustainable beaches.

“Our award-winning beaches are all beautiful but seeing that flag flying means visitors can be assured that they are being looked after for people and nature.

“It is amazing to see the consistency of standards and continuation of award status matters to those who apply year after year, and I’d like to thank all those, in councils and communities, who do so much to protect, maintain and enhance our beaches, protecting the sand and sea for us all to enjoy.

“Our Beach Managers network meets twice a year and gathered online and in person on 28 May to prepare for the season ahead.

“With speakers from Scottish Government, SEPA, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and more it is inspiring to hear how everyone works together to overcome challenges and make our award winning beaches the best they can be.

“We’re always looking for new beaches to join the award network, so if you think yours meets the standards, please do get in touch with us for support.”

As Scotland heads into another busy summer season, the awards offer a timely reminder that some of the country’s greatest attractions remain its coastlines, where communities continue working year round to protect the places that locals and visitors treasure most.
