Scotland’s Most Haunted Roads, Where Drivers Report Eerie Encounters and Chilling Sightings

Scotland is a land steeped in ‘myths and legends’, and its roads are no exception.

Car leasing comparison site LeaseLoco has compiled a list of Scotland’s most haunted roads – places you definitely wouldn’t want to break down on during a dark, windy night.

1. A75, Dumfriesshire

The most haunted road in Scotland, and some would say Britain.

Often referred to as the “Ghost Road”, there’s two known ‘hot spots’ of this 95-mile road: the stretch between Annan and Gretna and the well-known Kinmount Straight.

Documented reports go back at least 50 years, and as well as an assortment of animals, horsemen and carriages, some drivers have been convinced they’ve hit phantom figures on the road that emerge from the dark.

2. A87, Isle of Skye

Mystical isle, mystical tale.

The Sligachan to Portree road that’s said to be haunted by a phantom Morris Minor.

Yep, the ghostly apparition of an old Austin car with its headlights on has been reported over on the east side of the island.

Some claim they’ve pulled over to let the old banger overtake them, only for it to vanish into thin air a moment later.

The sightings date back to the 1940s and it’s speculated that the car is driven by the ghost of a church minister who caused a fatal car accident and went insane with guilt.

3. Electric Brae, Ayrshire

There’s no spirits here as such, but stop your car on this hilly incline, put it in neutral, and watch in wonder as the vehicle starts to roll up the hill, not down.

Same if you put down a football or any other object.

It was once believed to be down to an electrical phenomenon (brae being an old Norse word meaning hill, so ‘Electric Hill’), but it’s actually an optical illusion – what looks like an uphill slope isn’t actually uphill at all.

Of course, that fact doesn’t stop tourists from stopping their cars and watching the magic happen.

4. A93, Blairgowrie

The road that’s said to be haunted by a Hellhound.

This devilish canine is reported to patrol up and down the side of the road with its glowing red eyes.

If you’ve got dogs, then you’ll know the hound’s in the area as its presence makes normal dogs nervous and jittery.

It’s also said to carry around a terrible odour with it.

Worst of all, legend says that if you stare into its eyes three times, you’ll drop dead on the spot.

5. A9, Highlands

Running between Falkirk in central Scotland all the way up to the far north, drivers have reported seeing an ornate coach and horses with footmen walking alongside one stretch of road.

On another stretch near Dornoch, a motorist claimed to have seen a despondent-looking Victorian man on horseback.

6. Overtoun Bridge, West Dunbartonshire

A little off the beaten track, and mainly a bridge for walking, though you can drive over it too.

So well worth a visit if you’re just passing through.

It’s famous for being the place where at least 300 dogs have decided to jump to their deaths since at least the 1950s.

Yet many Scots themselves also claim to have felt a strong urge to throw themselves from this gothic structure over the years.

Some speculate that the dogs are drawn by the smell of wild animals in the surrounding woods.

In addition, it’s said that the grounds are haunted by the White Lady of Overtoun – the ghost of the wife of former estate owner John White.

John Wilmot, CEO of car leasing comparison website LeaseLoco comments:
