A wintry week is unfolding across the UK, with snow and ice expected to cause widespread disruption.
An Arctic airmass sweeping southwards from northern Britain will dominate the weather, following the passage of a low-pressure system heading towards Europe.
Yellow National Severe Weather Warnings for snow and ice are in force from Monday through Wednesday, impacting Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England, north Wales, and the north Midlands.
Dan Suri, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, has warned of a disruptive start to the week, with snow and ice coinciding with Tuesday morning’s rush hour.
“Low pressure moving eastwards on Monday night will bring a frontal system dividing cold air in the north and milder air to the south,” Suri explained.
This clash of air masses will result in snow for some areas, accompanied by strong winds in southern regions.
The Met Office advises staying updated, as warnings may evolve throughout the week.
Northern Scotland faces persistent snow and hail showers through to Wednesday morning, with accumulations of 2-5 cm expected in many areas and up to 20 cm possible over higher ground.
Icy surfaces will add to the hazards, especially in coastal regions where sleet may mix with snow at times.
Commuters are urged to plan ahead and prepare for potentially treacherous travel conditions as winter tightens its grip.
