SNP Calls for Inquiry as Security Measures Confirmed in Reid Case

The SNP has called for a full parliamentary inquiry following confirmation that enhanced security checks were introduced in response to the Joani Reid case.

The development follows reports that the Ministry of Defence implemented additional mitigations after concerns linked to the Scottish Labour MP and her personal circumstances.

The issue has intensified political debate, with questions raised over how the situation was handled and whether further scrutiny is required.

The case centres on Joani Reid, who is married to a man arrested on suspicion of being a Chinese spy, and the potential implications for national security.

The SNP has argued that the introduction of enhanced checks by the Ministry of Defence underlines the seriousness of the situation.

At the same time, questions have been directed at Scottish Labour figures, including whether decisions around Reid’s candidacy were properly examined.

Kirsty Blackman said:

“The Labour Party can keep ducking and diving, but the Scottish public can see this murky affair for what it is.

“A Scottish Labour Party MP single-handedly compromised two nuclear naval captains while she was married to a man arrested on suspicion of being a Chinese spy, that forced her MP colleague to contact counter-terror cops in fear of classified information ending up in the wrong hands.

“The public still await very basic answers.

“Did Jackie Baillie sanction Joani Reid’s candidacy and did she know about her behaviour at Faslane before it was forced into the public domain?

“This is about national security so rather than playing politics, the Scottish Labour Party and the UK Government need to take this matter seriously.”

The Labour Party has so far rejected claims that national security was compromised, maintaining that concerns have been overstated.

However, the confirmation that additional security measures were put in place has increased pressure for greater transparency.

The SNP maintains that a full parliamentary inquiry is now necessary to establish the facts and restore public confidence.
