Spring Warning as Highland Residents Urged to Avoid Rogue Traders

Highland residents are being urged to take extra care when arranging home improvements this spring, as Trading Standards warns of a rise in rogue traders and doorstep scams.

With longer days and warmer weather prompting repairs and upgrades, this period is often targeted by fraudsters offering quick fixes that can leave households out of pocket.

Common scams include roofing and guttering work that is unnecessary or poorly carried out, traders impersonating legitimate companies, and pressure selling tactics designed to rush decisions.

These approaches can cost residents hundreds or even thousands of pounds, with older and more isolated individuals often most at risk.

Highland Council Trading Standards is encouraging people to take simple steps to protect themselves, including using the Highland Trusted Trader scheme.

The scheme provides a directory of local businesses that have been vetted, follow a strict code of practice and offer transparent pricing alongside genuine customer reviews.

Using trusted sources is seen as one of the most effective ways to avoid problems before they start.

David MacKenzie said:

“With home improvement season kicking off, the message is simple: take your time, check who you’re hiring, and use trusted sources.

“A few quick checks can prevent costly mistakes and ensure your spring projects get off to a safe start.”

Residents are being advised to always get multiple quotes before agreeing to work, check identification of anyone calling at the door and avoid making decisions under pressure.

Reputable traders will allow time for consideration and will not push for immediate agreement or payment.

The guidance is clear, a small amount of caution at the start can prevent significant problems later.

As activity increases across the Highlands, the focus remains on helping people carry out improvements safely while keeping rogue traders firmly at bay.
