Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney has issued a powerful plea for peace, condemning the deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza and calling on the world to act with urgency and resolve.
His remarks come as Israel renews its military operations in the region, prompting fresh global concern over the rising civilian death toll and the worsening conditions for those trapped in the war-torn enclave.
Swinney described Israel’s latest actions and rhetoric as “deeply troubling” and stressed the urgent need for a ceasefire that holds.
He welcomed the growing chorus of condemnation from countries including the UK, France and Canada, who have all voiced alarm over Israel’s escalating offensive and the continued obstruction of life-saving humanitarian aid.
With supplies of food and medicine dwindling and thousands of civilians in desperate need, the First Minister warned that history would not look kindly on those who turn a blind eye.
“The Scottish Government has been consistent and forthright in calling for an immediate and sustained ceasefire, release of hostages, unimpeded access for humanitarian aid, compliance with international court rulings, and an end to licenced arms exports to Israel,” he said.
He reaffirmed Scotland’s support for a two-state solution, recognising the state of Palestine and promoting a vision where Israelis and Palestinians can finally live in peace side by side.
Swinney’s call adds to the growing international demand for a halt to the violence and an end to the suffering of civilians who have endured far too much for far too long.
His words echo a rising sense of urgency across the globe, as aid agencies warn of a looming catastrophe unless borders open for relief and hostilities come to an end.
“The international community must exert resolute pressure on Israel to bring an end to this tragedy and ensure lasting peace in the region,” he said.
As the conflict rages on, Swinney’s message is clear: the time for hesitation is over.
Only meaningful, collective international action can stop the spiral of violence and offer a future where dignity, security and justice are shared by all.
