The SNP has slammed the Tory government for hammering households by failing to take action as inflation hits 9.1% in the 12 months to May – the highest and fastest rate in 40 years.
SNP Treasury spokesperson Alison Thewliss MP has said that by failing to bring in meaningful financial support, the Tories at Westminster have made it clear they are callous and uncaring – and independence is the only way Scotland can rid itself of them and help households through the Tory made cost of living crisis.
The new figure follows two contrasting reports: one by the Resolution Foundation showing that Brexit is “making the UK poorer”, and another published by the Scottish Government last week demonstrating that Scotland would be better off by joining the ranks of the many small independent neighbouring EU countries continuously outperforming the UK on wealth, happiness and fairness metrics.
Commenting, Alison Thewliss MP said:
“How many more reports and rising inflation figures do we have to see before the UK government decides to act?
“Businesses and households can’t take much more of this – it’s time for the UK government to act, and with haste.
“In Scotland, using its limited powers and fixed budget, the Scottish Government is taking action to mitigate the Tory government’s failures.
“They have uprated benefits, doubled the Scottish Child Payment, and are spending £83 million on tackling the UK government’s cruel cuts.
“Meanwhile the Tories at Westminster refuse to lift a finger.
“Time and again the SNP has urged the Tories to take real action – but instead, they choose to make the rich richer and the poor poorer. This has to end.
“With Labour failing to take this UK government to task, and refusing to consider re-joining our allies within the EU, it is clear that only independence can protect Scotland from ‘Brexit Britain’.
