For the right Highlander with a bit of wanderlust in their soul, two unusual job opportunities advertised on Highland Jobs might just be the adventure of a lifetime.
The Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands is recruiting staff to spend six months living and working on the remote island of South Georgia during the austral summer season of 2026 to 2027.
The roles include two Post Officer positions alongside Builder and General Hand contracts.
For anyone unfamiliar with South Georgia, picture snow covered mountains, vast glaciers, king penguins by the thousand, elephant seals stretched across beaches and some of the most isolated scenery on Earth.
This is not a normal job.
It is part frontier outpost, part expedition and part old fashioned adventure.
The successful applicants will be based in Grytviken, the abandoned whaling station turned tiny settlement which now acts as the centre of government operations and tourism on the island.
Each year more than 15,500 visitors arrive on expedition cruise ships, yachts and research vessels, with staff acting as ambassadors for the territory as much as employees.
The Post Officer roles would suit someone with strong customer service, hospitality or retail experience and the ability to cope with life in a remote environment far removed from modern city living.
Applicants must be adaptable, organised and capable of living and working as part of a very small isolated team where everybody mucks in with daily life including cooking, cleaning and helping keep the station running smoothly.
The six month contracts begin in September and pay £28,380 pro rata.
Alongside the post office roles, the government is also recruiting builders and general hands to help maintain and repair the island’s modern and historic buildings.
The builder contracts offer between £25 and £27.50 an hour while general hand roles pay between £15.50 and £17 an hour for a 45 hour working week.
Travel, accommodation and food are all provided during the contract period.
The jobs demand resilience and self reliance but for the right people the rewards are obvious.
There are not many opportunities left in the world where somebody from the Highlands can leave home in September and spend the next six months living among glaciers, penguins and some of the wildest landscapes on the planet.
In truth, it sounds exactly the sort of thing a Highlander might quietly excel at.
Applications for the General Hand and Builder roles close on Friday 5 June while applications for the Post Officer positions close on 9 June.
