If you’ve ever wanted to make a real difference where you live, now could be your moment.
Nominations are officially open for individuals who wish to stand as Community Councillors in several Highland communities seeking to re-establish their local councils.
This is a unique chance to become a voice for your area and help shape decisions that impact the lives of people in your community.
Community Councils are voluntary organisations, but their influence is meaningful and far-reaching.
They give local people a platform to raise concerns, shape conversations and ensure their views are heard by Highland Council and other public bodies.
Whether it’s new housing, road improvements, planning decisions, or community services, Community Councils play a key role in representing the interests of residents.
Some councils manage Community Benefit funds from windfarm developments, helping reinvest directly into local initiatives.
Others have supported ambitious community development projects, improved access to healthcare, or helped preserve and enhance local environments.
The communities currently looking to re-establish or reactivate their councils are:
Ardgay and District, Arisaig, Aviemore, Avoch and Killen, Conon Bridge, Cromdale and Advie, Lochalsh, Nether Lochaber, Raasay, South Knoydart, Stratherrick and Foyers, Thurso, and Uig.
Anyone interested in standing as a candidate must complete and submit an online nomination form by 12 noon on Tuesday 2 September 2025.
Forms and further information are available now on the Highland Council website at www.highland.gov.uk/ccelections
The list of nominated candidates will be published no later than Wednesday 3 September, and any candidate wishing to withdraw must do so by 12 noon on Tuesday 9 September.
If the number of valid nominations exceeds the number of seats available for any council, a postal ballot will be held to determine the final members.
This is more than an administrative process.
It is a moment to step up, speak out, and represent your neighbours with pride and purpose.
Strong, active Community Councils help make strong, active communities.
Now is the time to get involved.
A digital toolkit has been put together to help communities raise awareness and includes useful information for anyone thinking about standing.
