Social Security Scotland has revealed its Annual Report, disclosing that £1.9 billion was paid out across the nation between April 2023 and March 2024 to support Scots amid cost-of-living challenges.

The sum was spread across 14 benefits unique to Scotland, including seven not offered anywhere else in the UK, underscoring Scotland’s distinct approach to social welfare.

Adult Disability Payment accounted for nearly £942 million, providing support to over 300,000 disabled Scots who now benefit from this vital assistance.

Families on low incomes received a total of £463 million, spread across five family payments, including the Scottish Child Payment, which had reached over 329,000 children by March 2024.

As heating bills soared, the Winter Heating Payment assisted over 400,000 people by February, ensuring vulnerable residents could better manage winter heating costs.

Meanwhile, Carer Support Payment—introduced in select areas last year and now available nationwide—continues to aid those who provide essential care to others.

This year, Social Security Scotland extended its reach to support diverse groups: carers, disabled individuals, families, young job-seekers, pensioners, and even those needing help with funeral costs.

The agency’s Client Survey highlighted a high rate of satisfaction, with 90% of respondents rating their experience as “very good” or “good,” reflecting both efficiency and a commitment to respect and dignity.

Among Scottish Child Payment recipients, 95% rated their experience highly, while 85% of all respondents felt valued and listened to by staff.

Overall, Social Security Scotland and the Department for Work and Pensions collectively invested £5.2 billion in benefits across Scotland through direct payments and Agency Agreements.

Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice Shirley-Anne Somerville emphasised the government’s commitment to fighting poverty, especially during this challenging economic period.

Somerville noted:

“Winter Heating Payment offers reliable, targeted support to low-income households, including pensioners, while our family payments, including Scottish Child Payment, supported over 329,000 young people by March 2024.”

David Wallace, Chief Executive of Social Security Scotland, highlighted the agency’s efforts to maintain high service standards, noting reductions in call waiting and processing times.

Wallace added:

“Our clients remain at the core of our mission, and I am pleased to see 90% of survey respondents rate their experience as positive.”

With targeted support and a focus on user experience, Social Security Scotland is making a substantial impact on the lives of people across the country, ensuring dignity and support for those in need.
