Moray Council has launched a crucial consultation that could significantly impact local council housing tenants across the region.
The authority is seeking residents’ perspectives on proposed rent increases, presenting two distinct options for consideration.
Currently, Moray maintains the most affordable council housing rates in Scotland, with weekly rents positioned between 41-46% below Local Housing Allowance levels, depending on property size.
Tenants are being presented with two strategic investment pathways: a 6% increase focused on maintaining housing quality and supporting new construction, or a 7% increase designed to accelerate kitchen and bathroom modernisation programmes.
The consultation represents a democratic approach to financial planning, inviting direct input from those most affected by potential changes.
An online survey forms the cornerstone of this engagement, complemented by targeted communication with the Register of Interested Tenants and Moray Tenant’s Forum.
Cllr Amber Dunbar, Chair of the Housing and Community Safety Committee, emphasized the importance of widespread participation, stating that comprehensive tenant feedback will directly influence decision-making processes.
The consultation window closes on Friday, 3 January, providing ample opportunity for residents to contribute their perspectives and help shape the future of local housing infrastructure.
By gathering comprehensive community insights, Moray Council aims to strike a delicate balance between maintaining affordable housing and investing in essential infrastructure improvements.
