Sunday 9 March 2025 will be a national Day of Reflection, providing an opportunity for people to come together to remember those who lost their lives and to acknowledge the sacrifices made during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event marks five years since the pandemic began, a time that altered countless lives and left an indelible mark on communities across the UK.
People will be encouraged to commemorate in their own way, whether by attending local events, organising personal gatherings, or reflecting quietly at home.
Opportunities to mark the occasion will also extend online, ensuring everyone can participate in a way that feels meaningful to them.
First Minister John Swinney emphasised the importance of this moment to pause, remember, and honour those impacted.
“2025 marks five years since the start of a pandemic that changed many of our lives forever,” he said.
“The Day of Reflection is an opportunity for people to remember and commemorate those who lost their lives, to reflect on the sacrifices made by so many, and to honour the work of health and social care staff, frontline workers, and all those who showed extraordinary kindness during that unprecedented time.”
Swinney encouraged individuals and communities to take part in ways that feel personal and fitting, highlighting the flexibility of the occasion.
“The COVID-19 pandemic impacted all of us in different ways, and you can mark the day in a way that feels right for you—whether it’s organising your own gathering, joining in a local event, or remembering quietly at home.”
This nationwide initiative will provide a moment of unity, offering everyone the chance to pay tribute to the resilience, compassion, and courage shown during one of the most challenging periods in recent history.
The Day of Reflection aims to not only honour those we lost but also to celebrate the strength of communities that came together to support one another in times of uncertainty and fear.
As the anniversary approaches, plans for local and national events will be shared, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to participate in this poignant and meaningful commemoration.
