The Highland Council has officially launched its search for the next young leader to take up the influential role of Highland Youth Convener for 2025–2026.

This one-of-a-kind, full-time position gives one young person the chance to represent the views and voices of youth across the region.

First introduced in 2007, the role has become a vital link between young people and decision-makers in the Highlands.

The Youth Convener sits on The Highland Council’s Education Committee and collaborates closely with the Council’s Youth Service.

They also help shape the direction of the Highland Youth Parliament and contribute to wider projects that place young people’s interests at the heart of community planning.

Current Youth Convener Lauren McKittrick described the experience as both “important and unique.”

She highlighted the direct relationship the role creates between young people and those in power as something that is deeply rewarding.

She urged any passionate young person with the drive to make change to step forward and apply.

Lauren said that engaging with the region’s youth and representing their concerns to senior officials offers an incredible opportunity for personal growth and public service.

Assistant Chief Executive Kate Lackie echoed the sentiment, calling the post a rare and powerful platform for influence.

She said the Youth Convener is not just a participant but a key connector, linking young people and services with policy-makers who shape their world.

The Youth Convener is expected to be the visible, vocal presence of young people in council structures and community conversations.

Principal Adult and Youth Services Manager Mark Richardson stressed the importance of upholding youth rights in every decision.

He said the Youth Convener ensures that young voices are not only heard but actively contribute to shaping future services and policy.

Richardson added that this role strengthens democracy by putting young people at the table where key choices are made.

The council is looking for applicants with strong communication skills, a deep understanding of youth issues, and the confidence to represent a broad range of opinions.

Candidates should be comfortable working across diverse groups and organisations to advocate for real and lasting change.

The post is open to any young person who believes in the power of youth voice and wants to be part of building a better Highland for future generations.
