More than 15,000 primary-aged children participated in a transformative online assembly that delved deep into the complex intersection of climate change and human rights, revealing an extraordinary commitment to environmental stewardship and community action.

The innovative digital gathering, orchestrated by Children’s and Young People’s Commissioner Nicola Killean and young advisor Sorcha, represented a pivotal moment in youth environmental engagement, carefully designed to inspire and empower without overwhelming participants with ecological anxiety.

Participants explored remarkable environmental initiatives that demonstrated the profound impact young defenders can have on critical sustainability challenges, including the inspirational Ullapool Seasavers’ Drain Campaign, which has become a beacon of community-driven environmental protection.

Primary Five pupil Zoe captivated the audience with her sophisticated understanding of hydrological systems, tracing water’s intricate journey from her school’s playground through local burns, rivers, and ultimately to the expansive ocean, illustrating the interconnectedness of environmental ecosystems.

Her classmate Khadijah offered a profound message of resilience for young activists, emphasising the importance of perseverance:

“Always stay positive.

“If you fail the first time, it’s fine.

“Just get up and try again, because you never know, the second time you might achieve it!”

The assembly, thoughtfully presented with British Sign Language interpretation, transcended traditional educational approaches by creating an interactive platform that educated, motivated, and empowered children about their critical role in addressing global climate challenges.

Interactive activities and youth-led video presentations underscored a nuanced narrative: while children demonstrate passionate commitment and innovative thinking, the ultimate responsibility for systemic environmental change rests with adult decision-makers.

By platforming young voices and their grassroots initiatives, the assembly highlighted Scotland’s emerging generation of environmental champions who are not merely waiting for change but actively creating it through education, awareness, and community action.

This pioneering initiative represents more than an educational event; it is a powerful testament to the potential of youth-led environmental advocacy and the transformative power of informed, passionate young defenders.

The assembly’s success signals a promising future where children are not just recipients of environmental knowledge but active, strategic participants in shaping a more sustainable world.
